Do you know how the Beijing Bird's Nest is welded?
 Mar 03, 2023|View:255

Do you know how the nest is welded? 265 top welders completed the welding task after two years!

If you have the opportunity to look closely, you can see the welder's name on the edge of each weld in the Bird's Nest.

At that time, there were more than 1000 excellent welders from all over the country, including those from the Urban Construction Group. After training, more than 450 welders were selected from the best.

Only with the training certificate can they enter the Bird's Nest construction site.

The welding position of the nest is very complex. In the past, we can adjust the position of the component to make the welder more comfortable. For example, if the component is to be welded upside down,

it will make the person more comfortable. However, the components of the Bird's Nest are particularly large and complex, which can only be adjusted by workers and welded for a long time in a narrow space.

Most of the time of welding in the Bird's Nest is in summer. The steel plate needs to be heated to more than 150 degrees. In order to ensure the welding quality, when we wear short-sleeved shirts in the summer,

the welders have to wear thick clothes and endure the high temperature baking. And you think, there will be welding slag falling down when you weld with your face up.

The welding process is not allowed to be interrupted. Otherwise, cracks, slag inclusion and other problems may occur. The longest welding process lasts 17 hours. Of course, we can change people. However, it is

a challenge to the welder's skill, physical strength and sense of responsibility.

At the peak of welding, we have thousands of welders on the construction site. They, plus 7000 concrete workers. The bird's nest is really built by their hands.

The name of a welder is engraved on the edge of each weld of the Bird's Nest. In this way, hundreds of ordinary welders have left their own tiny marks in this world-famous Olympic project - which may not be seen

by the public, but will never be erased.

As the city of the two Olympic Games, the relationship between the Olympic organizers and partners has been going on since 2008. This includes not only the official partners of the Beijing Olympic Games and the

Beijing Winter Olympic Games, but also the global partners of the Olympic Games. These partners have provided wisdom for Beijing to host the Olympic Games.

In the Beijing Winter Olympics propaganda group, Hou Qianying, a Chinese employee from the global partner enterprises of the Olympic Games, told the past of Chinese workers using the electric welding system

to serve the construction of the Bird's Nest.

Of the 12 competition venues used in the Beijing Winter Olympics, 5 are existing venues. The Bird's Nest is the most important landmark venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. It witnessed the lighting of the

2008 Beijing Olympic torch and will continue to serve as the venue for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

Bird's nest welding

That was in 2005. The Bird's Nest has been fully started. The high-altitude and large-span saddle-shaped design is very unique. There is no column inside. The all-welded heavy steel structure has high requirements for

welding quality and great difficulty. Not to mention that there is no precedent in China, it is also extremely rare in the world's welding history.

The whole steel is 42000 tons, which is made by welding. The total length of the weld is 320000 meters. Welding requires a 100% success rate, so welders must be verified and selected.

At that time, although our welding equipment was in place, there were too few qualified welders. Some people were scared away when they heard that it was too difficult to weld. Although some people dare to weld, their

skills are not up to standard.

It doesn't matter. As long as you have the backbone of our working class to win glory for the country, and have this Olympic sentiment, you can't weld. I'll teach you! China Engineering Construction Welding Association

specially hired Wang Yusong, a welding expert of our company and winner of the National May Day Labor Medal, to carry out all-round training for the 265 welders selected and teach them hand in hand.

Which links are the most difficult in the welding operation and how to overcome them later?

In order to ensure the firm welding of the Bird's Nest, we conducted 126 welding procedure qualification tests before the formal construction. One of the test weldments can be continuously welded for 38 hours at most,

and cannot be stopped in the middle.

At that time, the room temperature was 35 ℃, and the weldment had to be preheated to 150 to 200 ℃. The welder was sweltering and could wring water when his clothes were taken off. There are also difficulties from

the welding position, especially overhead welding. Overhead welding means that the welding gun is upward, and the welding position is above the welder's head. The weld is not easy to form, and the molten welding

wire and molten steel are especially easy to fall down and burn the welder.

Teacher Wang said: "Sometimes even if the hot welding flower falls into the neck, it dare not stop, otherwise there will be cracks, slag inclusion and other quality problems."

Teacher Wang trained and guided a domestic welding iron army. What are the problems that this team of workers solved in the welding construction of the Bird's Nest?

Teacher Wang carefully guided and trained a welding iron army, providing guarantee for the high-quality completion of the Bird's Nest steel welding.

The operation of welding is difficult, and it is also easy to have defects that are not qualified for flaw detection.

That is to say, although it is welded on the outside, there is no fusion in the inside. If this kind of defect appears even a little, it will be fatal in the special steel structure of the Bird's Nest, and even the whole collapse may

occur. The consequences are unimaginable!

Our process experts do not know how many meetings have been held and how many solutions have been formulated. Finally, technical difficulties have been overcome.

The scene of the bird's nest closing

On August 25, 2006, the Bird's Nest closed. Later that night, at a height of 70 meters, a total of more than 100 welders and more than 100 welders were mobilized to fight for two years and more than 700 days and nights

to meet this moment.

At that time, our company's service support personnel made all preparations in advance and carried out thorough spot inspection and maintenance of all welding equipment.

We climbed up the ladder. At first, we were very excited. But when we climbed to a place forty or fifty meters high, the ladder shook violently. In an instant, we felt that we were flying in the air and didn't dare to look down.

I only heard my heartbeat. The wind is strong at night. The more you go up the ladder, the more you shake. You have to stop for a few steps.

At zero o'clock, the commander in chief of the bird's nest closure announced that "the closure begins!" More than 100 welders started welding at the same time, and more than 100 weld junctions burst out dazzling sparks.

At this time, there was a light rain in the sky, and the arc light of the Bird's Nest was shining in the night sky, and the three huge steel structures were connected by little welding. A complete main structure of the stadium is

presented to the world.

Rain and tears flowed on the faces of all the masters at the scene, and we won. Cheers resounded over the bird's nest. We use Chinese technology and our own strength to weld the pride of a nation.
